Creating art has been my lifelong companion. I will paint on anything - with anything that makes a mark. But the world is too full of delicious distractions to do just one thing. Nature and knowledge are like food to me. I grew up in a time when children played outdoors unsupervised. We ran in playful packs like happy dogs. We explored nature - picked and poked at it, rolled in it, turned it over and examined what was underneath it. We reluctantly came home at dinner time, after which we went back outside to gaze at the stars. Lying on our backs in the prickly grass, like spent yogis, looking for the Big Dipper and Orion's belt.
Nature still lights me up like it did when I was 8 years old. The art I like to create always relates back to nature, whether it's organic swirls and patterns or the amazing, edible forms found in a garden. That desire to create and connect with life finds its way into my kitchen, where the tools and techniques of cooking are as satisfying to me as building an image on a piece of paper. My atelier website (www.joancatelier.com) showcases fine art drawings that honor chefs' work in the kitchen, as well as other hand images.
Creating art allows me to explore the beauty and inspiration I find in nature and share the delight with my viewers.
